Since 2018, Tom Christensen (he/him/his) has worked as a therapist in a variety of settings across NYC. He began his journey at a community mental health clinic providing individual and group therapy to youth and young adults before gaining additional experience working on an Assertive Community Treatment team, offering mental health services to individuals in NYC's shelter system. As a therapist in private practice, Tom continues to work with clients from all walks of life while fostering his passion to support the mental health needs of the LGBTQAI+ community.
Tom obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his Master of Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, graduating with honors from both institutions. Upon completing his MSW, Tom has furthered his education with additional training in evidence-based practices including Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Trauma-Focused CBT.
In addition to working as a therapist, Tom instructs Substance Use Treatment Providers in the practice of Motivational Interviewing through the Training and Practice Implementation Institute, which is affiliated with the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene and the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University. Prior to pursing his MSW, Tom worked in Operations at Zocdoc, where he cultivated a devotion to improving access to mental healthcare.
