Tom Christensen, LCSW
Psychotherapist in New York City
Whether you’re entering therapy for the first time or looking to start anew, I seek to create a safe and nonjudgemental environment where we can explore your current challenges and find realistic, lasting solutions. I believe the therapeutic alliance is the cornerstone of effective treatment and strive to create an authentic rapport rooted in empathy and trust. I have experience working with individuals impacted by anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, and other life stressors, including current events, work, and relationships. I am also very passionate about working with the LGBTQ+ community and with individuals in recovery.
Therapy can spark confidence, hope, and change. It can also elicit discomfort and confusion. My goal is to turn these moments, the "good" and the "not-so-good", into opportunities for self-reflection, acceptance, and growth. I employ a person-centered and relational approach that’s tailored to each individual’s needs, drawing upon psychodynamic methods and evidence-based practices that include CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing. My practice also utilizes an anti-oppressive and trauma-informed lens that emphasizes autonomy, empowerment, and respect.
I am very passionate about working with the LGBTQIA+ community in addition to individuals experiencing challenges related to:
Anxiety
Depression
Stress
Frustration Tolerance
Emotion Regulation
Major Life Transitions
Sexuality/Sexual Identity
Gender Identity
Substance Use/Recovery
Work/Career Aspirations
