Tom Christensen, LCSW
Psychotherapist in New York City
Whether you’re entering therapy for the first time or looking to start anew, I seek to create a safe and nonjudgemental environment where we can explore your current challenges and find realistic, lasting solutions. I believe the therapeutic alliance is the cornerstone of effective treatment and strive to create an authentic rapport rooted in empathy and trust. I have experience working with individuals impacted by anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, and other life stressors, including current events, work, and relationships. I am also very passionate about working with the LGBTQ+ community and with individuals in recovery.
Therapy can spark hope and confidence, as well as discomfort and confusion. My goal is to turn these moments into opportunities for self-reflection, acceptance, and growth. I employ a person-centered and relational approach that’s tailored to each individual’s needs, drawing upon psychodynamic methods and evidence-based practices that include CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing. My practice also utilizes an anti-oppressive and trauma-informed lens that emphasizes autonomy, empowerment, and respect.
I am very passionate about working with the LGBTQIA+ community in addition to individuals experiencing challenges related to:
Anxiety
Depression
Stress
Frustration Tolerance
Emotion Regulation
Major Life Transitions
Sexuality/Sexual Identity
Gender Identity
Substance Use/Recovery
Work/Career Aspirations
